Workshop Requirements (for promoters)
If you are interested in presenting Kiva's Harmonic Overtoning Workshop, please read through the following requirements/suggestions:
- The minimum number of participants required will vary according to the policies of the promoter. Contact Kiva to make specific arrangements regarding fees and splits.
- The single introduction workshop is 3-4 hours in duration. For extended (2-3 day) retreats, there is further instruction spread over the course of the days with additional elements.
- Ideally, the acoustics of the space should be nice and resonant. High ceilings help. If possible, carpeted rooms should be avoided as they tend to deaden the sound.
- Most people prefer to sit on fairly comfortable chairs with padded seats. There should also be cushions available for those who are able to sit on the floor. This produces a straighter posture, which is better for vocal production. Suggest participants bring their own cushions if desired, as well as water.
- A piano of any sort (in tune is best!) is a bonus, but not imperative.
- It should be stipulated that the ability of the student to recognize simple intervals is an asset.
- If there is a large number of registrants, separating them into two sessions according to musical background would be the best approach (i.e. non-singers who are interested in the therapeutic aspects and professional singers seeking new vocal tools). In this case, a minimum of a half hour is suitable for a break between the two time slots.
- The ideal situation is to combine the workshop with a solo concert performance by Kiva, either at the same facility or nearby venue. The workshop could take place either before the concert (the evening before, or the afternoon of the show), or the following afternoon or evening. Afternoon workshops tend to work better on weekends.
- A P.A. system is not required for the workshop, but is necessary for a concert.
- When there is a combination of workshop and concert, those who register for the workshop could receive a discount to attend the concert.
